Welsh Water has admitted sewage is leaking into the sea at Deganwy beach.

Last week Welsh Water/Dŵr Cymru sent letters to residents after complaints about foul smells on Deganwy Beach and Conwy Estuary.

It then emerged that a misconnection had resulted in sewage being pumped into the sea.

A misconnection occurs when wastewater is incorrectly connected to clean rainfall drains and goes directly into the watercourse or sea, causing pollution and an odour.

A spokeswoman for Welsh Water said the problem is being looked at.

“While our investigations have confirmed that our network is operating as it should, they have revealed that sewage is entering the surface water pipe which releases to the beach,” he said.

“We have traced the sewage back to unauthorised connections which have been made to our system from properties in the surrounding area. Working with Conway County Borough Council, we have written to properties in the surrounding area and advised them to check their private sewer connections so that any unauthorised connections can be identified and corrected.

“We would remind customers that if they are making any alterations to their properties that they must check with us with regards to any alterations that may be needed to the sewer configuration at the property.”
